Rang Bang is taken from the word Bangarang which basically means disturbance or chaos in Jamaican patois.
I wrote and recorded this ragga breakbeat track just after Gov Inslee shut down Washington state in late March. My creative space is down inna Pioneer Square area of Seattle and man it got really eerie down there when the lockdown first went into place. There was NOBODY on the streets except for the homeless who were confused that there was nobody around to tip them. Some of them were even walking around wailing out in despair. This was the situation day or night. Just Imagine a deserted neighborhood where you occasionally sight one or 2 people walking around. Had a real apocalyptic, end of the world vibe inna air. Which is why I called this style the "RaggApocalypse". Then came the taggers who started spraying political messages like "Where Is Besos?" on the boarded up businesses. Things felt like a real Rang Bang.
Just a little over a month later, and the city is still shut down. However, the energy has changed and the apocalyptic feeling has subsided a bit. Alot of those tagged boards have now been covered with big colorful paintings with messages of hope on them. Alot of the initial fear has passed. And that's not to make light of the still very serious pandemic out there, but now with so many people receiving Unemployment Insurance and stimulus checks, there has been some relief when initially no one knew what was going on.
My aim is never to push any political agenda on people. This lyrics were just my real life thoughts on the situation as it was occurring. And the beat is on sum breakbeat/hip hop raggamuffin business. Yunno I like to mix it upp..And I was glad to be able to musically document the initial energy in real time. And it felt like a big Rang Bang. Still does actually... Everybody stay safe out there....
